Cotton Bandanas

Onion Skins

Cotton bandana scoured and mordanted with soda ash and alum, dyed with 40 grams of onion skins. I simmered the onion skins in water for an hour to extract the color, added the bandana, and continued simmering for another 2 hours. The color became a nice vibrant mustard yellow.

Cochineal Bugs

Cotton bandana scoured and mordanted with soda ash and alum, dyed with 2 grams of Cochineal bugs. The bugs were first powdered using a mortar and pestle, and then simmered in a few inches of water to extract the color. The bandana was boiled in the dye bath for one hour and dyed a beautiful magenta color.

Osage Wood

Cotton bandana scoured and mordanted with soda ash and alum, dyed with 9 grams of Osage wood chips. The color wasn’t exactly what I wanted so I added 14 grams of Eucalyptus leaves and the yellow shifted to a more olive beige.
